This picture came out so great, so why do we have to call it Ugli Fruit?
I was shopping at Hannaford's Market, roaming the fruit section, when I came across this odd looking fruit. It was the size of a grapefruit, but looked like an orange with wrinkles. I read the tag "UGLI FRUIT". It looked interesting, why not give it a try?
Ugli Fruit grows wild in Jamaica and is a cross between a tangelo (tangerine and orange) and a grapefruit. You peel it like an orange and the flavor is a definite cross between the two, a little sour with the sweetness of an orange.
My son, Brian, and I attacked the first fruit, fighting over the last few slices. I loved the clean taste...not too sour, not too sweet. The second one was a little more sour, but equally as good.
If you are tired of the cold winter weather and would like to taste something light and refreshing (and rich with Vitamin C), reach for an Ugli Fruit. They taste better than how they look!
